Vacation in the Mad River Valley - and Finish with a Photography Session!
The Mad River Valley of Vermont has so much to offer to active families and couples. Sugarbush and Mad River Glen are, in my opinion, the best ski areas in the East, and they are so different from each other that both are worth a visit. Ole's Cross Country and Blueberry Lake Nordic ski areas will get your body moving with varied terrain for an awesome workout or family ski. But when the snow melts, the Mad River Valley becomes a gorgeous, lush green haven of farms, forests, and swimming holes. There is something for absolutely everyone! For the hikers and mountain bikers, the vast system of trails is ever-growing and well maintained. Foodies will love the Waitsfield Farmers Market and the variety of restaurants. And for those who love to relax, the Valley's Inns and swimming holes are just the ticket.
Here are my Top 6 Tips for Families when Visiting the Mad River Valley:
1. Bike at the Blueberry Lake Trails
These trails are family friendly, and there is a great 1 mile loop for the littles.
2. Hike Sunset Ledge on the Long Trail
This approximately 2.4 mile round trip trail starts up at a parking lot at the top of
Lincoln Gap, so a lot of the elevation gain is driven by car. Follow the Long Trail
South to an overlook of the Champlain Valley. This also happens to be a perfect
spot for a Surprise Proposal!
3. Watch the Warren Fourth of July Parade
2020 was a year like no other, and the parade sadly had to be cancelled. In a
normal year, the parade is an amazing thing. Huge homemade floats, usually
expressing the political opinions of the makers, make their way down Main Street,
led by none other than Bernie himself. Delicious food, a band and street dancing
top off the event. Last year the Mad River Valley community came together to
create a gorgeous Prayer Flag display. It wasn't the same, but when you come to
the Valley, you will find a tight knit, strong community that takes care of each
other.
4. Visit the Waitsfield Farmer's Market
The Waitsfield Farmer's Market is a foodie haven. Whether you are looking for a
prepared dish or want to cook up an amazing meal yourself, you will find everything
from local, organic fresh fruits and vegetables, to meats and beverages. You can
design a whole cheese and charcuterie board, complete with jams, pickles veggies,
and honey. Choose some fresh flowers for your picnic table or blanket, and you
have yourself an amazing luxury meal you can feel good about eating because you
are supporting our local farms and businesses and consuming the freshest
ingredients.
5. Swimming Holes!
Why is the Mad River "Mad"? Because it flows north, of course! In the summer,
head down to one of the many swimming holes to set up a blanket, relax, and take
a dip in the crystal clear water.
