What to Wear
for Your
Fall Family Photos
So, you've booked your fall family photo session in Vermont, but you are having a hard time figuring out the best outfits for your fall family portraits. This guide is full of inspiration and helpful tips so that you look amazing in your fall family portraits.
Each of the families on this page have killed it with their fall family photo session outfit choices. Read on to see what they did right, and how you can be inspired by their selections to choose the perfect fall photo session outfits.
Coordinating Outfits for Fall Family Photos
Your family doesn't walk around wearing matching outfits everyday, so you shouldn't do that for your family photos either. It looks really unnatural to even put everyone in matching shirts and jeans., and it will take away from the personality of each member of your family.
So how do you coordinate your outfits without being matchy-matchy? I always recommend starting by choosing mom's outfit first. That will set the tone of how dressy or casual your photo session outfits will be. Then make sure to keep everyone's attire in the same dressiness range. Even if mom wears a dress, the overall look of your family can be more casual when dad and kids wear something a tad more casual.
The colors that you choose are also important, and they should all complement each other.
The Best Colors to Wear for Fall Family Photos
The best color schemes for fall family photos will always include earthy tones, neutrals, and some jewel tones. You can see examples from the families here of colors that work really well together.
- Varying shades of cream, tan & brown
- Earth tones: rust, burnt orange, navy, hunter green
- Jewel tones: mustard, teal, maroon, gold, emerald
The Worst Colors to Wear for Fall Family Photos:
Any neon or fluorescent colors are the biggest no-no, but other colors that probably won't work well include:
- All black
- Bright red, orange, or yellow
- The whole family in blue and white. This will cool down the tones of your photos, which will compete with the golden tones of fall.

Layers Are Key!
You never know what the weather could be like on your photo session day. In Vermont, fall days can range from snow (yep, even in October!) to a 75 degree beautiful day. So choosing outfits that will look good with an extra sweater, or right down to t-shirts is the way to go.
You can layer your outfits while still looking amazing:
- Wear leggings under your dress or skirt.
- Wear a nice v-neck tshirt under your sweater
- Use scarves and shawls for warmth around your neck as these can easily be removed.
- It's better to add an additional long sleeve shirt under a sweater than to wear a puff coat over it.
- Bring a beautiful blanket to wrap your family up in- you will all keep warm while capturing sweet snuggling snapshots!
It's Important to Look Like Yourselves
Most importantly, look like yourselves in your fall family photos. Sure, you can dress up a bit nicer than what you usually wear on the day-to-day, but you want to recognize the people in your photos (your family!) and be more focused on the love and connection you share than on what you wore that day. Your outfits should not distract from your memories, as that's the true reason for getting your family portraits taken.
